17

They didn’t realize they were being watched.

A woman in business attire walking with a coffee cup in her hand on a city sidewalk with classical architecture, while a man wearing a hoodie and sunglasses stands near a tree in the background.

A girl with a backpack walking down a sidewalk in a suburban neighborhood with trees, houses, and a school bus in the background, during sunset.

it was supposed to be an ordinary day.

a call that changed everything.

A man appears distressed, holding his forehead with one hand and talking on a cellphone, while a woman next to him reacts with concern, covering her mouth with her hand in a warmly lit living room.

A man and woman running barefoot on a wet street at night, appearing distressed and looking back, with dim streetlights illuminating the scene.

desperation becomes determination.

Two people, a man and a woman, appear distressed and dirty, standing close together in a dark, gritty basement or cellar with exposed brick walls, dim lighting, and cluttered shelves.

The truth was worse than they imagined.

writer’s note

The inspiration for 17 came from a deeply personal place.

Years ago, my wife and I were faced with decisions that many families encounter but rarely talk about openly. Like countless others, we trusted the process, trusted the professionals, and believed we understood the full scope of the choices we were making. But the experience left me wondering about the unseen consequences of decisions that can ripple far beyond the moment they’re made.

That question stayed with me: What if an act intended to help others came back years later in a way no one could have imagined?

From that idea grew 17, a suspense thriller about family, trust, unintended consequences, and the extraordinary lengths parents will go to protect the people they love. While the story explores a fictional mystery, its emotional foundation is rooted in something very real: the hope that we’re making the right choices for our families, and the fear of discovering we never knew the whole story.
